What you leave with

A summit reached on a bearing you took yourself, in the dark, without a phone

Terrain navigation taught where it matters: contour lines, declination, resection and night descent, on ridges with 1,200 feet of gain.

Every session ends after dark. One stage is a descent during nautical twilight without blinding headlamps, which is a skill nobody has until they are made to practise it.

What makes this one worth it

  • Topographic Maps, Contour Lines & Aspect Reading
  • Compass Triangulation & Field Bearings
  • Twilight Transitions, Night Vision & Descent Mechanics

What you cover, in rotation

The group works through these in order and then begins again on fresh ground. Join at whatever stage it is on — nothing here assumes you were there for the last one, and nothing runs out — or drop in for a single session if that is all you can manage.

  1. Stage 1Topographic Maps, Contour Lines & Aspect Reading
    • Reading USGS 7.5-minute contour lines, elevation gradients and spurs.
    • Sighting landmarks and orienting maps to magnetic north.
    • Steady uphill pacing and the rest-step climbing technique.
  2. Stage 2Compass Triangulation & Field Bearings
    • Calculating magnetic declination for Southern California.
    • Forward bearings, and resection from two peaks.
    • Arriving on the ridge crest for golden hour.
  3. Stage 3Twilight Transitions, Night Vision & Descent Mechanics
    • Navigating rocky descents during nautical twilight without headlamps.
    • Preserving peripheral night vision and using poles for balance.
    • Recognising barn owls and great horned owls along the ridge.
  4. Stage 4Final Peak Trek & Trailhead Social
    • A group-led navigation trek to a panoramic summit.
    • Night beacon identification and stargazing from the ridge.
    • A tailgate social at the base with warm cider and route stories.

4 sessions in the cycle, then it begins again on new ground.
