What you leave with

A full-day backcountry traverse of a remote slot, navigated by the cohort

Carved sandstone slots, badlands and desert washes. Route finding where GPS does not reach, flash flood judgement, desert hydrology and the survival fundamentals that make the rest survivable.

The fourth session is a peer-led traverse: the guide is present and the cohort makes the calls, which is the only honest test of whether the first three worked.

What you cover, in rotation

The group works through these in order and then begins again on fresh ground. Join at whatever stage it is on — nothing here assumes you were there for the last one, and nothing runs out — or drop in for a single session if that is all you can manage.

  1. Stage 1Desert Geology, Washes & Canyon Entry
    • Formation of sandstone slots, seismic faults and mudstone.
    • Reading desert topography and navigating in GPS-denied slots.
    • Pack gear, hydration maths at a litre an hour, and sun exposure management.
  2. Stage 2Scrambling Mechanics & Shoulder-Width Slots
    • Body positioning, three-point contact, and stem climbing in narrow chutes.
    • Dry waterfalls, loose scree descents, and pack-lowering techniques.
    • Bighorn sheep sign, sidewinders and scorpions.
  3. Stage 3Flash Flood Meteorology & Emergency Shelters
    • Regional weather radar, upstream drainage basins, and flood indicators.
    • Emergency signalling, desert bivouac placement, and thermal regulation.
    • Natural water procurement and solar distillation physics.
  4. Stage 4Deep Badlands Traverse & Capstone Expedition
    • A full-day traverse through remote canyons.
    • Peer lead rotation: route judgement, pacing and group safety.
    • Sunset desert reflection and campfire debrief.

4 sessions in the cycle, then it begins again on new ground.

  • Full days, 7–8 hours, on uneven ground and loose scree
  • Cancelled outright on any flash flood watch upstream

Not recommended for

  • Anyone not comfortable on unstable footing for a full day
