What you cover, in rotation

The group works through these in order and then begins again on fresh ground. Join at whatever stage it is on — nothing here assumes you were there for the last one, and nothing runs out — or drop in for a single session if that is all you can manage.

  1. Stage 1Stargazing Foundations, Constellations & Dark Adaptation
    • Preserving scotopic night vision with red-spectrum lighting.
    • Planisphere reading and seasonal pointer stars — Polaris, Ursa Major, Orion.
    • Bortle scale darkness ratings and atmospheric transparency.
  2. Stage 2Telescope Optics, Collimation & Planetary Viewing
    • Setting up Dobsonian and Schmidt-Cassegrain reflectors.
    • Optical alignment, eyepiece focal lengths and tracking calibration.
    • Lunar craters, Jupiter's Galilean moons, and Saturn's rings.
  3. Stage 3Deep Sky Objects, Star Clusters & Astrophotography
    • Star-hopping to Messier objects: the Ring Nebula, Andromeda, the Pleiades.
    • Long-exposure night-sky photography and tracking mounts.
    • Low-impact night camp pitching and cold-desert layering.
  4. Stage 4Overnight Dark-Sky Basecamp & All-Night Vigil
    • A full overnight wilderness camp beneath the Milky Way core.
    • Meteor shower observation, satellite tracking, and indigenous celestial lore.
    • Morning solar telescope viewing of flares and sunspots over breakfast.

4 sessions in the cycle, then it begins again on new ground.
