What you leave with

One finished canvas, signed, shown at a cohort gallery on the land

This is not a sip-and-paint. You work on a single, continuous canvas across the whole month, and each session adds a layer the last one made possible — sky before trees, trees before the hawk, the hawk before the grass in front of it.

Working en plein air means the light changes while you paint, which is the point and also the hard part. Partway through a rotation you are mixing what you see rather than what you expected, and by the end of it you are signing something.

What you cover, in rotation

The group works through these in order and then begins again on fresh ground. Join at whatever stage it is on — nothing here assumes you were there for the last one, and nothing runs out — or drop in for a single session if that is all you can manage.

  1. Stage 1Sky, Horizon & Atmospheric Light

Session 1 · Horizon Line & Composition Sketching

    • Grid and composition planning on the blank canvas.
    • Perspective rules for open outdoor landscapes.
    • Initial charcoal and pencil underdrawing.

Session 2 · Sky, Clouds & Colour Gradients

    • Mixing natural sky hues, morning light, and twilight blends.
    • Wet-on-wet technique for cloud formation and atmospheric depth.
  2. Stage 2Flora, Trees & Midground Depth

Session 1 · Botanical Structure & Tree Trunks

    • Anatomy and branching patterns of local flora — sycamores, coastal live oaks.
    • Shading for volume and bark texture.

Session 2 · Foliage Layers & Natural Light Filtering

    • Dabbing, stippling and palette knife techniques for leaf clusters.
    • Capturing sunlight filtering through branches.
  3. Stage 3Wildlife & Fauna Focal Points

    Session 1 · Wildlife Anatomy & Proportions

    • Proportion mapping and blocking in a focal animal — hawk, quail, deer, fox.
    • Capturing posture and natural movement.

Session 2 · Feather, Fur & Eye Detailing

    • Fine-brush techniques for realistic fur and feather texture.
    • Painting eye reflections and expressive features.
  4. Stage 4Foreground Depth, Harmony & Showcase

Session 1 · Foreground Detail & Shadow Balancing

    • Ground cover, rocks, native grasses and contrasting deep shadows.
    • Harmonising colour temperature across the whole canvas.

Session 2 · Final Glazes, Highlights & Exhibition

    • Highlights, protective finishing touches and artist signatures.
    • Cohort critique and a showcase gallery on the land.

8 sessions in the cycle, then it begins again on new ground.

Who leads it, and what is provided

Led by Passionate independent landscape painter or fine arts instructor.

Curriculum instruction, personalised student feedback, and social sharing with their own followers.

On the table when you arrive

  • Outdoor easels
  • Pre-stretched canvases
  • Acrylic and oil palettes
  • Brushes and rinse jars
  • Sun canopies

And then?

Take it again, on a new theme

Going round once does not mean you are done with it. The same journey rotates through these subjects, so staying on is fresh ground rather than a repeat — no prerequisites, and nothing to re-learn.

  • Coastal River Valley & Birds of Prey
  • Desert Foothills & Mammals
  • Sunset Marshland & Aquatic Wildlife
