What you leave with

Every blade you own, hair-whittling sharp, and the knowledge to keep them that way

The physics and metallurgy of a sharp edge, taught on your own tools. Kitchen knives, Japanese blades, axes, chisels and secateurs all come in, and all go out sharper than they were when they were new.

Japanese waterstones, diamond plates and a loaded leather strop. Before long you are testing edges on paper and arm hair; by the end of a rotation you are restoring rust off a tool somebody's grandfather owned.

What makes this one worth it

  • Metallurgy, Bevel Geometry & Coarse Apex Setting
  • Japanese Waterstone Progression & Burr Removal
  • High-Grit Polishing, Strops & Razor Edge Refinement
  • Specialty Blades — Axes, Chisels, Shears & Rust Restoration

What is included

  • All 4 sessions of the 4-week cohort — 8 hours of instruction
  • A place held for you for the whole run, in a cohort of 8–10
  • Every piece of equipment listed below, provided on the day
  • Your instructor, and their attention in a group this size

What to bring

What you cover, in rotation

The group works through these in order and then begins again on fresh ground. Join at whatever stage it is on — nothing here assumes you were there for the last one, and nothing runs out — or drop in for a single session if that is all you can manage.

  1. Stage 1Metallurgy, Bevel Geometry & Coarse Apex Setting
    • Steel types — carbon steels against stainless VG-10 and AUS-8.
    • Edge geometry: Scandinavian grind, convex, flat bevel and asymmetric bevels.
    • Establishing a uniform apex and raising a consistent burr on 400-grit stones.
  2. Stage 2Japanese Waterstone Progression & Burr Removal
    • Progressing through 1000-grit to 3000-grit stones.
    • Pressure modulation and muscle memory for a consistent angle.
    • Deburring on felt, end-grain wood and stone surface passes.
  3. Stage 3High-Grit Polishing, Strops & Razor Edge Refinement
    • Mirror-edge polishing with 6000–8000 grit finishing stones.
    • Leather strop loaded with chromium oxide and diamond paste.
    • Paper cut, tomato drop and arm-hair whittling sharpness tests.
  4. Stage 4Specialty Blades — Axes, Chisels, Shears & Rust Restoration
    • Sharpening convex axe bits, bevel-edge chisels and bypass pruning shears.
    • Rust removal with vinegar baths, brass brushes and rust erasers.
    • Camellia oil coating and long-term tool preservation.

4 sessions in the cycle, then it begins again on new ground.
