What you leave with

A field portfolio of four coastal studies, hung at a blufftop pop-up gallery

Watercolour outdoors on the headlands, where the marine layer burns off mid-session and the sea changes colour twice while you are mixing. You learn washes, negative space, granulating pigment and the discipline of the fast study.

The sites rotate — bluff, cliff, headland — so the last session is a different problem from the first one.

What makes this one worth it

  • Marine Atmospheres, Washes & Horizon Values
  • Water Movement, Breaking Swells & Foam Negative Space
  • Sandstone Cliffs, Coastal Flora & Geological Textures
  • Light Shifts, Final Exhibition & Field Portfolio

What is included

  • All 4 sessions of the 4-week cohort — 14 hours of instruction
  • A place held for you for the whole run, in a cohort of 8–10
  • Every piece of equipment listed below, provided on the day
  • Your instructor, and their attention in a group this size

What you cover, in rotation

The group works through these in order and then begins again on fresh ground. Join at whatever stage it is on — nothing here assumes you were there for the last one, and nothing runs out — or drop in for a single session if that is all you can manage.

  1. Stage 1Marine Atmospheres, Washes & Horizon Values
    • Value studies and thumbnail composition grids on the bluff edge.
    • Wet-on-wet graduated washes for coastal skies and fog banks.
    • Mixing muted ocean blues, warm sands and misty horizons without muddiness.
  2. Stage 2Water Movement, Breaking Swells & Foam Negative Space
    • Capturing wave structure, shorebreak curls and white-water spray.
    • Preserving paper whites and masking fluid for sun glint on the ocean.
    • Dry-brush techniques for sea foam and textured water surfaces.
  3. Stage 3Sandstone Cliffs, Coastal Flora & Geological Textures
    • Painting sandstone bluffs, sea caves and cliff erosion patterns.
    • Granulating pigments and salt-sprinkle techniques for stone realism.
    • Blocking in sagebrush, coastal chaparral and Torrey pine silhouettes.
  4. Stage 4Light Shifts, Final Exhibition & Field Portfolio
    • A fast plein-air study capturing late afternoon golden light.
    • Harmonising shadows, fine-line gouache highlights, and framing.
    • A blufftop pop-up easel gallery and peer reflection critique.

4 sessions in the cycle, then it begins again on new ground.
