What you leave with

Your own stacked astrophotograph of a deep-sky object

Live feeds from remote desert observatories and on-site field telescopes. Deep-sky nebulae, galaxy mapping, stellar life cycles and astrophotography.

Family friendly and genuinely so — the objects get further away every week, which is a structure a ten-year-old follows as easily as an adult.

What makes this one worth it

  • The Local Solar System — Moon, Planets & Orbital Mechanics
  • Stellar Evolution — From Nurseries to Supernovae
  • Deep Sky Galaxies & The Large-Scale Cosmic Web
  • Astrophotography with Smart Scopes & Q&A

What is included

  • All 4 sessions of the 4-week cohort — 6 hours of instruction
  • A place held for you for the whole run, in a cohort of 12–16
  • Every piece of equipment listed below, provided on the day
  • Your instructor, and their attention in a group this size

What to bring

  • Water, and something to eat if you want it
  • Nothing else — the kit is provided

What you cover, in rotation

The group works through these in order and then begins again on fresh ground. Join at whatever stage it is on — nothing here assumes you were there for the last one, and nothing runs out — or drop in for a single session if that is all you can manage.

  1. Stage 1The Local Solar System — Moon, Planets & Orbital Mechanics
    • Lunar topography: basaltic mare plains, crater rays and Apollo landing sites.
    • Jupiter's cloud belts and Great Red Spot; Saturn's Cassini division.
    • Celestial coordinate systems: right ascension and declination.
  2. Stage 2Stellar Evolution — From Nurseries to Supernovae
    • The Hertzsprung-Russell diagram and how stars forge heavy elements.
    • Observing the Orion Nebula and other stellar nurseries.
    • White dwarfs, planetary nebulae and neutron star physics.
  3. Stage 3Deep Sky Galaxies & The Large-Scale Cosmic Web
    • Andromeda, Triangulum and the Virgo Cluster.
    • Hubble's law, cosmic redshift, and the expansion of the universe.
    • Dark matter evidence from galactic rotation curves.
  4. Stage 4Astrophotography with Smart Scopes & Q&A
    • Stacking live digital exposures on smart telescopes.
    • Processing colour channels and eliminating light pollution noise.
    • A live Q&A with research astrophysicists over hot cocoa.

4 sessions in the cycle, then it begins again on new ground.

Who leads it, and what is provided

Led by Observational astrophysicist / planetarium educator.

Telescope live control, deep-sky narration, and interactive Q&A.

On the table when you arrive

  • Smart robotic telescopes
  • Laser pointers
  • Digital sky chart downloads
