Twilight Ridge Crew: Find Your Way With Map and Compass
Hike San Diego ridges at sunset with a map and compass, and learn to get yourself down safely after dark without a phone.
Nadia Brandt guided in the Sierra for eight years before moving out to Borrego Springs, where the walking is harder to read and a great deal easier to get wrong. Heat, water and turning back on time are most of the skill; the rest is knowing which canyon still holds shade in August.
Groups are small and the pace is set by whoever is finding it hardest. Nobody is left behind and nobody is hurried, which makes for a slower day than the mileage suggests and is the reason people come back for the second one.
