What you leave with

A six-mile reserve rim traverse, and the ability to read a bluff

The rarest pine in North America, fog drip ecology, sandstone geomorphology and a negative-tide beach traverse — walked at first light, when the reserve is empty.

It is genuinely early and genuinely worth it. By the end of a rotation you are doing a six-mile loop connecting the high ridge to the secluded canyon trails.

  • The Endangered Pinus Torreyana & Coastal Fog Drip
  • Sandstone Geomorphology & Razor Point Badlands
  • High Bluff to Low Tide Beach Traverse

What you cover, in rotation

The group works through these in order and then begins again on fresh ground. Join at whatever stage it is on — nothing here assumes you were there for the last one, and nothing runs out — or drop in for a single session if that is all you can manage.

  1. Stage 1The Endangered Pinus Torreyana & Coastal Fog Drip
    • Biology and adaptation of the rarest pine tree in North America.
    • Fog drip ecology: how needles comb moisture from marine fog banks.
    • A sunrise rim hike along the Guy Fleming Trail at dawn light.
  2. Stage 2Sandstone Geomorphology & Razor Point Badlands
    • Wind and wave erosion on the Delmar Formation and Torrey Sandstone.
    • Red-clay badlands, canyon flutes and coastal sea caves.
    • Photographing early morning coastal shadows and offshore swells.
  3. Stage 3High Bluff to Low Tide Beach Traverse
    • Descending the Beach Trail switchbacks to the secluded shoreline.
    • Marine intertidal life along Flat Rock at negative morning tide.
    • Osprey nests, brown pelicans and peregrine falcons.
  4. Stage 4Extended Reserve Rim Traverse & Coastal Ecology Seminar
    • A six-mile loop connecting high ridge overlooks with canyon trails.
    • Coastal conservation, climate impact on bluffs, and reserve protection.
    • Coffee and a farm pastry picnic at the historic stone lodge.

4 sessions in the cycle, then it begins again on new ground.
