What you leave with

The ability to read any street in this city and say why it is shaped that way

A walking seminar through historic districts, hidden alleys and urban corridors. How zoning, transport shifts, civic master plans and architectural fashion since the 1880s still decide how the city works today.

Each week is a different district and a different era, and the rotation ends on a rooftop looking at a skyline the earlier walks explain.

What you cover, in rotation

The group works through these in order and then begins again on fresh ground. Join at whatever stage it is on — nothing here assumes you were there for the last one, and nothing runs out — or drop in for a single session if that is all you can manage.

  1. Stage 1The Victorian Boom & Speculative Street Grids (1880–1910)
    • Alonzo Horton's speculative grid against the natural topography and canyon cuts.
    • Victorian commercial brickwork, cast iron facades and bay windows.
    • How early streetcar lines created the first streetcar suburbs.
  2. Stage 2Spanish Colonial Revival & The 1915 Exposition Legacy
    • Bertram Goodhue's Spanish-Colonial language in Balboa Park.
    • Arcades, Churrigueresque ornamentation and tiled domes.
    • The tension between fabricated historical myth and regional identity.
  3. Stage 3Mid-Century Modernism, Freeways & Canyon Bridges
    • Post-war suburbanisation, Interstate 5, and urban severance.
    • Bankers Hill pedestrian suspension bridges over natural chasms.
    • Mid-century civic architecture and structural glass.
  4. Stage 4Adaptive Reuse, Placemaking & The Future Street
    • Industrial warehouse conversion and community muralism in Barrio Logan.
    • Pocket parks, parklets, transit-oriented development and pedestrian-first urbanism.
    • A final rooftop discussion over the skyline with local craft drinks.

4 sessions in the cycle, then it begins again on new ground.
