What you leave with

250 years of this county, walked in order, ending at a heritage feast

Regional transformation across San Diego's historic adobes, mission settlements and heritage corridors. Earthen construction, indigenous interaction, Spanish colonisation, the Mexican rancho era and early American statehood.

Chronological on purpose: each week is the consequence of the one before it, which is what makes the last session land.

What makes this one worth it

  • Presidio Hill & The Founding of Alta California (1769)
  • Earthen Architecture & The Art of Adobe Brickmaking
  • Mexican Secularization & The Rancho Era (1821–1848)
  • The American Transition & Historic Preservation

What you cover, in rotation

The group works through these in order and then begins again on fresh ground. Join at whatever stage it is on — nothing here assumes you were there for the last one, and nothing runs out — or drop in for a single session if that is all you can manage.

  1. Stage 1Presidio Hill & The Founding of Alta California (1769)
    • The 1769 Spanish settlement atop Presidio Hill.
    • Franciscan missionaries, Spanish soldiers and the Kumeyaay nation.
    • Presidio ruin mapping and orientation over the San Diego River.
  2. Stage 2Earthen Architecture & The Art of Adobe Brickmaking
    • Authentic adobe: clay, sand, straw and water curing.
    • Casa de Estudillo and Casa de Machado y Stewart.
    • Thermal mass properties of thick earthen walls in this climate.
  3. Stage 3Mexican Secularization & The Rancho Era (1821–1848)
    • Secularisation of mission lands and the rise of the cattle ranchos.
    • Rancho social culture, the hide-and-tallow trade, and fandango traditions.
    • Tile roofs, inner courtyards and wooden corredor verandas.
  4. Stage 4The American Transition & Historic Preservation
    • The Battle of San Pasqual, statehood, and the shifting town centre.
    • The early 20th-century preservation battles.
    • A heritage feast with handmade tortillas and regional storytelling.
