What you leave with

A restored stretch of creek bank, live-staked and planted by your own cohort

Degraded freshwater stream corridors, worked alongside restoration practitioners. Invasive eradication, native propagation, live staking and macroinvertebrate bio-assessment.

Live staking is the trick worth knowing: a dormant willow cutting driven into a moist water table roots on its own, which is how a creek bank is rebuilt without a nursery.

What makes this one worth it

  • Riparian Hydrology & Invasive Species Removal
  • Native Willow Harvesting & Live Staking
  • Native Tree Planting & Seed Scattering
  • Macroinvertebrate Bio-Assessment & Creek Celebration

What is included

  • All 4 sessions of the 4-week cohort — 12 hours of instruction

What you cover, in rotation

The group works through these in order and then begins again on fresh ground. Join at whatever stage it is on — nothing here assumes you were there for the last one, and nothing runs out — or drop in for a single session if that is all you can manage.

  1. Stage 1Riparian Hydrology & Invasive Species Removal
    • How riparian willow woodlands moderate floodwater and recharge groundwater.
    • Identifying and clearing giant reed, tamarisk and castor bean.
    • Preventing soil erosion along destabilised creek cut banks.
  2. Stage 2Native Willow Harvesting & Live Staking
    • Harvesting live dormant willow and mulefat cuttings.
    • Driving cuttings into moist subterranean water tables for rapid rooting.
    • Building brush wattles and coir log barriers.
  3. Stage 3Native Tree Planting & Seed Scattering
    • Planting western sycamore, coast live oak and Fremont cottonwood.
    • Mycorrhizal soil inoculation and gopher wire basket installation.
    • Hydro-seeding native riparian grass and forb blends.
  4. Stage 4Macroinvertebrate Bio-Assessment & Creek Celebration
    • Kick-net stream sampling for mayfly, stonefly and caddisfly larvae.
    • Measuring dissolved oxygen, pH and turbidity.
    • A celebration lunch under the sycamores over the restored stretch.

4 sessions in the cycle, then it begins again on new ground.
