A five-mile continuous harbour circuit, finishing at a dockside café

Working harbours, boat channels and marine anchorages under paddle and oar. Coastal rowing, sea kayak pacing, and navigation among ferries and naval traffic.

What you cover, in rotation

The group works through these in order and then begins again on fresh ground. Join at whatever stage it is on — nothing here assumes you were there for the last one, and nothing runs out — or drop in for a single session if that is all you can manage.

  1. Stage 1Vessel Trimming, Launching & Harbour Etiquette
    • Launching from marina slips and floating docks.
    • Active marina channels, blind corners and speed limit rules.
    • Establishing a rhythmic, continuous paddling cadence.
  2. Stage 2Harbour Traffic Navigation & Commercial Vessel Awareness
    • Crossing active ferry channels and naval security zones.
    • Sound signalling, horn blasts and awareness of oncoming powerboats.
    • Stern ruddering and directional control in crosswinds.
  3. Stage 3Coastal Ecology in Urban Harbours & Bait Barges
    • Maritime landmarks and historic tall ships, under paddle.
    • Marine life around bait barges and sea lion haul-out docks.
    • Long-distance pacing and interval endurance.
  4. Stage 4Full Harbour Loop & Morning Dockside Coffee
    • A five-mile circuit around Shelter Island and America's Cup Harbor.
    • Docking at a waterfront café for a group breakfast and debrief.
    • Equipment care, freshwater wash and salt prevention.

4 sessions in the cycle, then it begins again on new ground.
