What you leave with

A submission-ready personal statement, at its third draft

The complete essay cycle for high school seniors: topic discovery, narrative arc, structural revision and line editing, for the Common App and the UC personal insight questions.

Nothing here claims an admission and nothing here can. What it produces is a third draft, which is roughly two drafts further than most applicants get.

What you cover, in rotation

The group works through these in order and then begins again on fresh ground. Join at whatever stage it is on — nothing here assumes you were there for the last one, and nothing runs out — or drop in for a single session if that is all you can manage.

  1. Stage 1Unearthing The Small Thing & Topic Discovery
    • Why college essays are not resumes, and the clichés that sink them.
    • The object box and values montage exercises for finding a real anecdote.
    • Drafting openings that drop the reader into the middle of a scene.
  2. Stage 2Narrative Arc, Vulnerability & The First Rough Draft
    • Narrative structure against montage structure.
    • Writing with sensory texture, and showing rather than telling.
    • Completing the raw, uncensored first draft.
  3. Stage 3Structural Surgery & The Second Draft
    • Cutting the throat-clearing preamble and strengthening reflection.
    • The 'so what?' test on every paragraph.
    • Peer reading circles with structured feedback protocols.
  4. Stage 4Line Editing, Rhythm & The Final Polish
    • Pruning passive voice, cliché adjectives and redundant adverbs.
    • Reading aloud to calibrate rhythm and authentic voice.
    • Common App formatting compliance and a final review.

4 sessions in the cycle, then it begins again on new ground.
