Ocean Swim Club: Swim Open Water at La Jolla Cove
For pool swimmers who get nervous in the ocean. Build up to a one-mile swim out to the buoys at La Jolla Cove and back.
Dani Whitmore lifeguarded this coast for nine years before coaching it. Salt & Sand is three things: a swim clinic at the cove, a strength circuit on the sand at first light, and a trail running form clinic at Mission Trails on Saturdays.
The through line is that all three are teaching rather than company. There are excellent groups in this city that will swim, run and train alongside you every week, and you should join one. These are the mornings you book two or three times a year to get better at the thing you then go and do with them.
Conditions decide the water, always. If the entry at the cove is a bad idea the session moves to sheltered water or is refunded, and you hear by 6am rather than at the beach with a towel.
